Abstract

This paper presents a tool to visualize open learner models. The tool is domain independent and is freely available as a web service. It can be easily integrated with any existing web-based learning environment.

Abstract

This paper introduces a set of resources that provide web learning environments with student modeling services. SAMUEL is a user modeling server for registering, updating and maintaining student knowledge data from different sources that use their own ontologies. In order to make inferences about student knowledge, it becomes necessary to establish equivalences between concepts of different domains. For this purpose we have developed SONIA, a tool to edit and integrate models which allows semi-automatic ontology mapping. The set of resources is completed with INGRID, an independent generic open learner model for interacting with external student models.

Abstract

As a consequence of the increasing importance of distance education there is a growing interest in the application of intelligent techniques to existing web-based educational systems. Many researchers are focusing their efforts on reusing high quality educational software and material to take advantage of their sound theoretical foundations and effective teaching strategies. In this paper, an open learning platform for the development of intelligent web-based educational systems is presented. MEDEA is a service-based learning platform that allows using intelligently different integrated learning systems for instruction purposes. To achieve this task, MEDEA provides a common student model and an instructional planner. Learning resources are integrated as web services. Systems developed with MEDEA guide students in their learning process but permit free navigation to better suit their learning needs. The learning platform has been instantiated and evaluated by developing with satisfactory results two intelligent web-based systems for the study of Logic and Agrarian Economy

Abstract

This paper presents a framework for the integration of web-based educational systems. It is part of a research project, MEDEA, whose final goal is to develop a general framework to build open Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS). We understand. open system. as a set of autonomous educational modules which communicate between themselves, following high-level pre-established protocols. Each module can be an intelligent component with its own instruction strategies, or other components like support tools, web pages, etc. In the second case, the adaptive capabilities are left to the ITS instructor core. The architecture opens up the possibility to include new web-based components.
